Beyond the Image
Contemporary Irish Photography
At Paris Photo this year, Momentum Gallery Miami is presenting ‘Beyond the Image: Contemporary Irish Photography’. Featuring five Irish artists – Mandy O’Neill, Shane Lynam, Jan McCullough, Sean Hillen and Alan Butler – the exhibition challenges traditional understandings of photography through documentary, abstraction, experimentation and expanded photographic processes.
Organised to accompany the exhibition, Momentum Gallery Miami and the CCI present this panel discussion exploring the ideas, processes and perspectives shaping contemporary Irish photography. Moderated by Sarah McAuliffe, Curator of Irish Art Post-1900 at the National Gallery of Ireland, the conversation will consider each of the five artist’s introduction to photography and the development of the bodies of work presented at Paris Photo 2026. Topics will include the physical and material processes behind the images, from analogue and chemical techniques to experimentation, abstraction and the incorporation of other media. The panel will also consider the experience of making work on an island amid Ireland’s changing environmental, political and social landscape; the growing recognition of photography in Ireland over the past decade; and the future of the medium. Finally, it will examine the role of international art fairs such as Paris Photo in supporting Irish and international photographers, strengthening collecting and institutional engagement, and influencing photographic education.
