Literary evening with Maram al-Masri and Theo Dorgan

The Syrian poet Maram al-Masri is one of the most renowned and captivating feminine voices of her generation. Besides numerous poems published in literary journals, in several Arab anthologies and in various international anthologies, she has published several award-winning collections of poems. Translated into English by Theo Dorgan, her collection Barefoot Souls chronicles the lives of Syrian women living in a Muslim culture in contemporary France. This evening will also offer a pre-publication look at their new book, Liberty Walks Naked, a collection dealing in its entirety with Syria and its current agonies.

Born in Cork in 1953, Theo Dorgan has made his home in Dublin for many years. Poet, prose writer, editor and translator, he has also written scripts for film documentaries and worked as a presenter of literature programmes on radio and television for over 25 years. He is a member of Aosdána.

On Friday 27 January, Maram al-Masri and Theo Dorgan will discuss the art of poetry translation at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 (Paris 6e).
