The Centre Culturel Irlandais presents Disputed Territory by Irish artist Anthony Haughey. This exhibition of photography, as well as light and sound installations, is a central element of the Centre's winter programme which also examines human rights.

One of Ireland's most significant photographers, born in Northern Ireland in 1963, Haughey explores the recurring past in the vocabulary of the present. In Disputed Territory, the artist investigates not only Ireland's own scars but also continuing conflicts over territory, rights and land ownership elsewhere in Europe. Living near the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic as well as travelling to Bosnia and Kosovo, Haughey has spent many years exploring these highly contested spaces; he examines the new marks and signs of lingering disputes.

Set in non-specific landscapes, the iconography of many of the images is seemingly banal: a surveillance camera, hundreds of discarded plastic objects, a light bulb hanging from the sky? Through subtle indication, the force of these images lies in their ability to involve the viewer in imagining the indescribable effect of human conflict.

Having exhibited internationally, Anthony Haughey's work is already recognised in France.

This exhibition is arranged in collaboration with the Gallery of Photography, Dublin.
