Transient Composing - Subjectivities and Sonic Storytelling in the Film Score

Following a three-month residency at CCI, James McGlynn presents the fifth annual Rev. Liam Swords Foundation lecture: Transient Composing - Subjectivities and Sonic Storytelling in the Film Score. A conductor, composer and PhD Excellence Scholar from Ireland, currently pursuing his doctoral research in film music at University College Cork, McGlynn’s research offers new approaches to consuming, interpreting and analysing music in cinema. During his time in Paris, James had the opportunity to study under Parisian composer Michel Chion, one of the world’s foremost voices on the relationship between sound and image. McGlynn will demonstrate how the film composer is capable of directly influencing our experience of a narrative in the most specific and complex ways, discussing an eclectic array of contemporary and classic filmic and televisual texts.
