The Digital Leprechaun with Fintan Vallely

Fintan Vallely concludes his assessment of Irish traditional music by describing the way the music is played today. Revival began in the 1950s, accelerating during the 1970s with the application of the benefits of sound technology and a more prosperous Ireland. Today the music also has many avant-garde professional performers, some crossing over into jazz, some to rock and classical. Traditional music is now taught in several third-level courses. It has a 'popular' practice not only in Ireland but also as a sub-culture in all European countries, the USA and Australia. Today it is likely that there are as many people outside Ireland playing as within the island, and the greatest markets for it performance and albums are outside the island as well.

The lecture will be followed by a performance by Fintan Vallely and Desi Wilkinson in a flute duet of old and modern tunes.
