Plunge into the ‘rentrée littéraire’ with this launch of Paul Lynch’s second novel The Black Snow in French translation (Albin Michel) following his highly acclaimed Red Sky in Morning in 2014. Set in 1945, The Black Snow transforms Lynch’s home-county of Donegal into a “lyrical land of hope and menace” (Alan Cheuse, NPR) for returning emigrant Barnabas Kane, who is considered even more of a local stranger following the burning of his byre with his livestock and farm hand inside.
“Lynch has an impressive gift for storytelling. As the separate strings of the novel are tightened and pulled together into an assured ending, this becomes a version of Donegal that has not been written before.” (Hugo Hamilton for The Guardian)
“A brilliant, hypnotic book. You will lose yourself in the sounds and rhythms — Lynch makes the page sing like the old masters”. (Philipp Meyer)
“Lynch establishes himself as one of his generation’s very finest novelists. “The Black Snow” is a dark, mesmerizing study in obsession, despair, and secrets too long held”. (Ron Rash)
Paul Lynch also writes regularly as a journalist and film critic for the Sunday Times, Irish Daily Mail and The Irish Times.
