Northern Irish author Maggie O’Farrell’s latest novel Instructions for a Heatwave (2013) is launched this evening in French translation. During the unbearable temperatures of the 1976 heat wave in London, a man – husband, father, grandfather – vanishes. He simply walks out of his front door to buy a paper, and never returns. A masterful exploration of complex family tensions unfolds as his bewildered family try to track him down.
