CCI’s four day celebration of Irish crime writing looks at Ireland’s particular take on the crime novel. A land known for its lyricism, this love of language can also be regarded as a distinctive characteristic of Irish crime writing. Opening with a conversation with Benjamin Black (aka John Banville) and presenting chaired discussions and readings with some of Ireland’s finest crime writers, Noir Emeraude embraces themes such as the ethics of basing novels on true crimes, the growth of the psychological thriller and Ireland as a backdrop for crime fiction.

Thursday 20 September, 7.30pm
DETECTIVES AND CRIMINALS FROM PAGE TO SCREEN: Jo Spain in conversation with filmmaker Conor Horgan
Irish crime novelist Jo Spain, who has just been commissioned to write her first television drama for RTÉ, will discuss the challenges of moving from writing books to screenplays, with reference to her new series, Taken Down, which will be produced this year by the makers of Irish ratings phenomenon Love/Hate (see below). A timely Parisian appearance, since Jo Spain has just been signed by the French publisher City Editions.

SCENE OF THE CRIME: Alex Barclay, Declan Hughes in conversation with Declan Burke (Chair)
‘Scene of the Crime’ looks at Ireland as a backdrop in crime fiction, with a spotlight on contemporary social commentary, and teases out what’s involved in setting work in other countries: the reasons, the pitfalls and the advantages.

WHYDUNIT: Liz Nugent, Jane Casey, Declan Burke in conversation with Declan Hughes (Chair)
‘Whydunit’ looks at alternatives to the traditional whodunit crime writing, focusing in particular on psychological drama as well as comic crime writing.

TRUE CRIME: Eoin McNamee, Niamh O’Connor, Sam Bungey & Jennifer Forde in conversation with Wesley Hutchinson (Chair)
Sam Bungey and Jennifer Forde are the makers of West Cork, a podcast recently commissioned by the online podcast platform Audible about the murder in West Cork of Frenchwoman Sophie Toscan de Plantier. Together with the panel, they will discuss the ethics of basing novels on true crimes

SCREENING: Screening of the first season of the popular Irish crime series Love/Hate
Season one comprises four episodes: one episode will be screened each evening (c.10pm) following the festival sessions above (in English with French subtitles).
