2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O'Connell, a major figure in Irish politics and a pioneer on issues of independence, Catholic emancipation, and non-violence in the 19th century. Beyond Ireland, O'Connell had close ties to France, residing in France at the end of the 18th century. Joséphine de Gaulle, writer and grandmother of Charles de Gaulle, dedicated a remarkable biography to him.
The Embassy of Ireland and the Centre Culturel Irlandais invite you to explore the legacy of the “Liberator” and his strong ties to France and Europe. This conference will also be an opportunity to open a conversation on the resonance of Daniel O'Connell's ideas today and on contemporary political issues such as democracy and citizen participation in political affairs.
The conference will be held in the Centre Culturel Irlandais on Wednesday 19 November, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, and Thursday 20 November at the Embassy of Ireland in France, from 11am to 6pm. Click here to listen at the recording of this event.
