Culture, Metaphor and Confusion: Brian Friel’s “Translations”

Is it possible for literature to have an effect on society? Can the language of drama act in such a way as to change political and social structures? In the Irish context, at least since the days of the Irish Literary Revival, there has been a sense that literature can indeed do these things. Taking the example of Brian Friel’s play Translations (1980), and drawing on the concepts of culture, metaphor and confusion which it develops, Dr. Timothy O’Leary of the University of Hong Kong will identify how such action is possible.
