Counterparts - Joyce in Dublin and Paris
Ronan Guilfoyle’s Quintet

With Dominique Pifarély (violin), Stéphane Payen (alto sax), Michael Buckley (saxophones, flute), Ronan Guilfoyle (bass), Christophe Lavergne (drums)

For this year’s Bloomsday, bassist Ronan Guilfoyle's Irish-French quintet will perform his acclaimed innovative musical piece inspired by the music quoted in the works of James Joyce - specifically the works written in Dublin and Paris. Partly written and partly improvised, utilising street sounds from Dublin and Paris, the piece also uses text from various works both as a generator for the music, and in spoken-word format as an integral part of the piece. The suite reveals new aspects to the musicality of Joyce’s prose, and creates a unique environment for improvising musicians to explore the work of Joyce through musical means. The music is based around tightly coiled unison lines from violinist Dominique Pifarely, alto saxophonist Stéphane Payen and tenor saxophonist Michael Buckley, as well as Guilfoyle's wiry bass lines and drummer Christophe Lavergne's punchy rhythms, all of which ignite fiery individual playing from the front line.

“Counterparts stakes a further claim for Guilfoyle as being one of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz” (Ian Patterson, All About Jazz)
