With Mathias Lévy (violin), Miklós Lukács (cimbalom), Mátyás Szandai (double bass)
Jazz musicians are often inspired by classical music but few dare take on the work of the Hungarian genius, Béla Bartók. French violinist Mathias Lévy and his Hungarian partners Miklós Lukács and Mátyás Szandai have taken up the challenge, going so far as to call their trio Bartók Impressions! Their ambition is to develop a range of improvisations while keeping to the principles and spirit of Bartók’s compositions. The group are eager to avoid his best known pieces and fall into clichés of gypsy music so their repertoire draws mainly on the composer’s works for piano, in particular “Microkosmos”, as well as Romanian Christmas songs and dances.
