Multi-media artist Andrew Kearney is fascinated by the way that the built environment can bring to life real and imaginary memories, desires or dreams. The exhibition Mechanism was developed by Kearney following his residency at Centre Culturel Irlandais in 2015 during which he was struck by “the cyclical relationship between the historic communal buildings and the central space - the Coeur.” Through a shining veil, visitors are drawn into the natural stage of the CCI courtyard where a silver orb is enigmatically presented before them and their footsteps animate a light and sound installation in the gallery space. Courtyard activity becomes the composer of an on-going dialogue between what the artist sees as the building’s internal and external organs, between the public and the personal, the ordinary and the extraordinary.
