Adapted from Claire Keegan’s Booker Prize-nominated novella of the same name, Small Things Like These is a deeply affecting story of quiet heroism and empathy set in a small Irish town in 1985. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man faces into his busiest season. Early one morning, while delivering an order to the local convent, he makes a discovery which forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a town controlled by the church. Directed by Tim Mielant with a script by Enda Walsh, Cillian Murphy takes on the central role in a powerful performance that, like the book on which it is based, forces us to ask ourselves how we would react if faced with Bill’s moral dilemma.
‘A deep-dive character study anchored by Cillian Murphy’s fiercely internalised performance, Tim Mielant’s film is quietly emblematic of a changing Ireland’ (The Irish Times)
‘An absorbing, committed drama.’ (The Guardian)
