A melancholy, well-crafted drama set in 1920s Ireland, the film is based on the novel by Elizabeth Bowen. The setting is the estate of an aging English couple (Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith) in County Cork, who welcome into their lives an eclectic cast of characters, including their outgoing niece. As political troubles begin to emerge, the lives of everyone involved are profoundly affected.
Directed in 1999 by Deborah Warner from a John Banville script, it also stars Jane Birkin, Fiona Shaw, Lambert Wilson, Keeley Hawes.
