The Irish Times dubbed this quintet a “supergroup made up of some of the biggest names in traditional Irish music” before they had even made their National Concert Hall debut in August 2011! Since then, President Michael D Higgins has been one of the biggest fans of their alchemical compositions: while clearly rooted in the traditional vernacular, the group introduce elements of post-rock, jazz, contemporary classical, chamber and minimalism in a manner that has never been attempted before. They have released two albums to unanimous critical acclaim and their international tours have brought them from Sydney Opera House and The Kennedy Center to La Philharmonie in Paris. Presented by Centre Culturel Irlandais, for one night only, this evening’s concert is a golden opportunity to see The Gloaming in the wonderful surroundings of the Athénée theatre.
