As Ireland takes on the role of guiding difficult conversations across the European Union, CCI is hosting a screening of The Journey, a fictional account of the true story of how Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness formed an unlikely political alliance in the lead-up to the St Andrews Agreement in 2006.
The leader of the Democratic Unionist Party leader, Ian Paisley (Timothy Spall), and Sinn Féin politician, Martin McGuinness (Colm Meaney), first met twenty years ago in Scotland to begin the negotiation of power-sharing in Northern Ireland. Early on in the proceedings, Paisley needs to return to Belfast for his 50th wedding anniversary. McGuinness decides he must accompany his arch-enemy to prevent him from being persuaded to abandon this chance for peace. Under the nervous gaze of Prime Minister Blair and his MI5 team, watching via hidden cameras, the two men embark on a journey together which will change the course of history.
The film was part of the Special Presentations lineup at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016 and premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
Screenwriter Colin Bateman will be present for a short discussion of the film.
