Tory Island, nine miles off the coast of Donegal is the most remote inhabited island off Ireland. Its notorious inaccessibility and unforgiving landscape has not deterred 175 people from making this island their home.
Oileán Thoraí is an hour long Irish language documentary which captures, over the course of a year, the changing patterns of life on Tory and the reality of the isolation which forces many to leave. It’s an intimate portrayal, exploring the lives of the islanders, their character and community, their perception of time and the influence of the past on the present.
Through interviews with the islanders we learn about the rich language which still thrives, the austerity of the winter months and the continuation of ancient traditions. Photography plays a major part in this documentary, capturing the island in all its bleakness and beauty
