Man of Aran

  • English with French subtitles, 73 mins, 1934

Director Robert Flaherty used a family as the centre-piece of this famous documentary in which he captured great ocean waves crashing into dramatic limestone cliffs, filmed storm-wracked fishing excursions to harpoon basking sharks, showed how to grow potatoes on craggy land that has little soil but an abundance of seaweed, and underlined what it really meant to live yoked to the necessity of back-breaking labour on the remote Aran Islands.
