Mai 68: Ireland and France

  • Friday 31 March and Saturday 1 April 06
  • in English and French
  • 8€ for both days

This conference looks at both French and Irish societies, taking as its starting point Peter Lennon’s films The Rocky Road to Dublin (1968) and The Making of the Rocky Road. Filmed by Nouvelle Vague cameraman Raoul Coutard, they provide a snap shot of a society on the brink of change, at almost the same time as the student riots of May 68 were erupting onto the streets of Paris. Looking at the remarkable images on film, the germs of contemporary Ireland are revealed. The evening screening of the two films, with the participation of Peter Lennon, will be followed the next day by discussion and analysis of the legacy of ‘68.

This event is organised in collaboration with the Huston School of Film & Digital Media, NUI Galway
