Portrait of an Irish collector

As part of the PhotoSaintGermain festival, the CCI in collaboration with the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) are delighted to present a selection of photographs from the renowned collection of Dr David Kronn.

A medical geneticist and longtime supporter of photography Dr Kronn, originally from Dublin, began his collection in New York in the early 1990s. What began as a reflection of classic 20th century developments soon began to encompass practitioners and subjects that have more recently burgeoned to worldclass recognition such as Evelyn Hofer, Graciela Iturbide, Daido Moriyama, Malick Sidibe and Pieter Hugo. Alongside are exciting developments in Irish contemporary photographic practice by artists including Alice Maher, Anna Rackard, Amelia Stein and David Farrell to name but a few. Luckily for IMMA and for Ireland, Dr Kronn’s ambition is to establish a worldclass photography collection as part of the National Collections of Ireland. He continues to develop his pledged collection for IMMA which currently stands at 1200 works approximately.

A private collection is a portrait over time of a collector’s thinking and instinct. This curation for Centre Culturel Irlandais, will draw on the notion of the portrait in its widest sense to explore echoes between cultures in terms of tradition, ritual and myth as well as aspects of contemporary social fabric and diversity. Transformed by the camera these images leave their mark both timeless and life-affirming.
