Paris Fantastique: The City and the Birth of the Modern Fantastic in the 19th Century

The 2014 Liam Swords Foundation bursary, based at the CCI, was awarded to Dr. Patricia García. Following her months of research this summer, her lecture tonight will discuss the connection between Paris and the genre of the fantastic. She will explore different events and places which contributed to the rise of fantastic literature in the city during the 19th century and analyse different fantastic representations of Paris in texts by Théophile Gautier, Honoré de Balzac, Alexandre Dumas and Guy de Maupassant.

Spanish-born Patricia García holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from Dublin City University, where she has lectured for the past five years. She also collaborates in the area of literary translation with Ireland Literature Exchange, Trinity College Dublin. She has just taken up the post of Assistant Professor in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies at the University of Nottingham.
