Samuel Laurence Cunnane
Un jeune homme s'habille sur une plage et autres images
Working with analogue photography, Samuel Laurence Cunnane has described himself as a ‘documentarian’. His images are the result of a considered and thoughtful process of active observation. The artist records quiet and easily overlooked moments of daily life and is drawn to the unnoticed periphery, whether in Guangzhou, Tehran, the Balkans, or his native Kerry. His photographs deromanticise the popularly sentimental, with landscapes often interrupted by utilitarian infrastructure. Yet a sensitivity to light, framing and texture gives the works a cinematic quality, and Cunnane’s attachment to printing by hand in the darkroom serves to heighten their intimate resonance.
Cunnane has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Villa Concordia, Bamberg, Germany (2025); Öktem&Aykut, Istanbul (2025, 2021, 2017); Kerlin Gallery, Dublin (2024, 2020, 2015); OCT Boxes Museum of Art, Shunde, China (2018); Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2016) and THEODORE: Art, New York (2015).
This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Kerlin Gallery, Dublin.
