Sofia Belleggia

Sofia Belleggia completed her BA in Historical, Philological and Literary Studies and MA in Philology and Literary Criticism at the University of Trento (Italy). She is currently a PhD student in Medieval Irish at Maynooth University (Ireland), in collaboration with the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS).

Her research focuses on producing the first critical edition, translation, and commentary of three medieval Latin miracle collections concerning St. Laurence O’Toole, twelfth-century Irish abbot of Glendalough, archbishop of Dublin, and patron saint of Dublin and Eu, Seine-Maritime. Preserved in four principal manuscripts now held in Paris, these collections contain approximately 250 miracles of healing and intercession for petitioners from all levels of late medieval French society. Her research aims to provide a reliable textual foundation for future scholarship, to examine late medieval society in France and Ireland as portrayed in the miracle accounts, and to explore the European cultural memory of an Irish saint. Her work will also represent a timely contribution to the upcoming international commemorations of St. Laurence O’Toole’s birth (1128-2028), and death (1180-2030).
