Niamh Boyce’s novel The Herbalist (2013) won Debut of the Year at the Irish Book Awards 2013 and was nominated for an IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Based on the trial of an Indian herbalist, it is set in her hometown of Athy, Co. Kildare. Her Kind (2019), the writer’s second novel, was also about an Irish trial - the 1324 trial of Alice Kyteler, the first woman tried for heretical sorcery in Europe. Nominated for the EU Prize for literature, the judges considered it ‘as searing a critique of our own times as is Arthur Millar’s The Crucible.’ Niamh has just completed The House of Crowe and plans to work on her story collection during her residency in Paris.
