James Hanley
April — July 2007
The Dublin-based artist is a figurative painter and a renowned portraitist. Using his painting as a form of storytelling, he explores the narratives and intersections of history and contemporary culture, often taking the individual as both a focal point and as one of departure. Posters, television, advertising and cinema inform his compositions. He is widely exhibited and his work features in collections in the National Gallery of Ireland, IMMA, the Arts Council, AIB and the European Parliament. As well as portraits of figures of Irish society, from Ronnie Delany (2000) to Bertie Ahern (2003), his Abbey Triptych celebrates the centenary of the Theatre in 2004. He is also frequently commissioned by An Post for commemorative postage stamps. http://www.jameshanley.net/
