Christine Mackey
February 2024
Christine Mackey, an independent research-based visual artist, delves into intricate environmental issues through her work in various site-specific and socially engaged contexts. Recent residencies include The Song of the Wind in Korea and participation in the Woodland Symposium in Galway. Mackey's accolades comprise The Arts Council Visual Bursary award and a Culture Moves Europe residency. Her evolving practice, ACTS OF CARE, addresses landscape conditions with temporary interventions and diverse materials.
During her residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Mackey focuses on the endangered Plane 'Platanus' tree population in response to the 'canker stain' fungus threat. Incorporating scientific data, historical archives, and cultural significance, her work explores the global movement of these trees and contemplates the impact of climate change on 'Arbour' communities. Solo exhibitions include The Long Field at Leitrim Sculpture and Safe Hold at Wexford Arts Centre in 2021.
