Sandra Johnston

Sandra Johnston artworks are predominantly made through performance art, video installations, drawing and writing. Johnston’s practice is rooted in processes of improvisation and typically her performance actions involve a sparsity of materials and attentiveness to context. The video installations fuse fragments of historical archival material into intricate relationships with performed gestures, which enable a speculative opening up of narratives around trauma, memory, and personal implication.

While at the CCI, Johnston will develop a project involving photographs of World War II theatre productions created in prisoner of war camps. Through scored movements and texts, a reimagining will emerge of the hidden gestures barely visible within these archival remnants.
