James Martin

Architect James Martin has worked with studios including Sou Fujimoto, Herzog & de Meuron, and Grafton Architects. His own practice is driven by an interest in exploring natural bio-based materials and the reinterpretation of traditional building practices.

During his residency, James plans to investigate the structures and processes necessary to bring about change in the construction industry through interviews and site visits with France-based architects constructing buildings with raw earth. These include a private house by Dechelette Architecture, a childcare facility by Atelier Régis Roudil Architectes, a factory by Paul-Emmanuel Loiret, and a EU-funded initiative ‘Cycle Terre’ which will use 400 million tons of excavated material from the construction of Paris’ new Metro to build 17,500 housing units in North-eastern Paris.
