Daniel Butler is an Irish-speaking filmmaker from the Donegal Gaeltacht whose folklore inspired short film Bean Feasa qualified for the Academy Awards 2024.

The project he plans to develop in Paris is a mythic social drama called Balor that explores the myth of ‘Balor and the Evil Eye’ in a modern drama set in the Donegal Gaeltacht where the events of the tale are etched into the landscape and place names.

Balor was a cyclops based on Tory Island who led raids on the mainland including the filmmaker’s home parish of Cloich Cheann Fhaola, which is named after a chieftain Balor killed.
