The award-winning documentary The Road to Sparta follows the fortunes of four runners, including “UltraMarathon Man” Dean Karnazes, as they attempt to follow in the footsteps of Pheidippides and complete the gruelling 246-kilometre Spartathlon from Athens to Sparta in just 36 hours. The story, set against a backdrop of fear and crisis in Greece, is told through the verse of the acclaimed American poet AE Stallings and the vibrant specially-written score from Greek band Old House Playground. The Road to Sparta is produced and directed by Barney Spender and Roddy Gibson who met as undergraduates at Trinity College Dublin in the 1980s. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with producer/director Barney Spender.
“The heat boils off the screen. The discomfort twists the subjects’ ill-used features. It’s a classy piece.” (The Irish Times)
