Lovett holds us spellbound as he catches the humor as well to the wisdom of Ishmael’s commentary. His pauses for thought, for memory, for finding the right word remind us that the story of this noble but melancholy ship, its crew, its quarry and its captain with crucifixion in his face, is one told by a man of honour and of mercy.
Melville’s biblical imagery and almost Shakespearean phrasing brought a luminous and wondering compassion to the story, which seemed true both to his inspiration and his genius. Irish Times theatre highlights 2009
