In the Irish context, at least since  the days of the Irish Literary Revival, there has been a sense that literature can indeed do these things. Taking the example of Brian Friel’s play Translations (1980), and drawing on the concepts of culture, metaphor and confusion which it develops, Dr. Timothy O’Leary of the University of Hong Kong will identify how such action is possible.
